Vietnam is set to face a prolonged and intensified cold wave throughout February, with stronger-than-usual cold air masses expected to grip the country, a meteorologist warned on Saturday.
According to Tran Thi Chuc, deputy head of the climate forecast division at the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the coming cold spells will exceed historical averages in intensity, particularly in the latter half of the month, leading to extended periods of severe cold in northern regions.
Colder-than-average temperatures expected
While national average temperatures will largely align with historical norms, northern and central regions are forecast to be 0.5-1 degree Celsius below seasonal averages, Chuc said.
Rainfall is expected to be consistent with previous years, except in the central region, where precipitation could exceed typical levels by 10–20mm. This area may also experience scattered showers and occasional thunderstorms.
Extreme weather conditions could pose risks
Chuc warned that a range of extreme weather events, including fog, thunderstorms, lightning, frost, and hoarfrost, could emerge across the country.
At sea, the strong cold air systems may trigger high winds and rough waves, posing risks to maritime activities.
On land, prolonged cold spells could severely impact livestock, crops, and public health, particularly in northern mountainous areas, where frost and hoarfrost are likely to develop.
Foggy conditions could also reduce visibility, increasing the risk of traffic accidents, she added.
Authorities urge vigilance, preparedness
Authorities are urging residents to stay informed through updates from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting via its website and official media channels.
Meanwhile, local governments and disaster management agencies have been directed to swiftly disseminate weather alerts, enforce safety regulations, and restrict access to high-risk areas prone to thunderstorms and lightning strikes.
