The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) on Wednesday afternoon hosted a ceremony to welcome the Akademik Oparin research vessel of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) which arrived in south-central Khanh Hoa Province to carry out a joint scientific survey in the East Vietnam Sea.

This is the eighth survey trip by the Akademik Oparin vessel in Vietnam’s waters.

It is also part of a road map for marine research cooperation in the 2018-25 period between VAST and RAS.

During his virtual speech at the opening ceremony, VAST president Chau Van Minh reviewed the outcomes of the previous seven survey trips, saying that this eighth survey trip is a meaningful event as it is the first activity to implement a cooperation agreement between the two academies.

During this survey trip, Vietnamese and Russian scientists will conduct a comprehensive research about marine biodiversity in the East Vietnam Sea, as well as coral reefs and microbes in order to find a new source of biochemicals.

Konstatin Mogilevsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia, hailed the long-term, effective collaboration of the two academies.

He hoped the two academies will continue executing the above-mentioned road map till 2025 and bolster cooperation in the years ahead.

After completing necessary procedures, the vessel with nearly 40 scientists on board will start a survey voyage scheduled to last for a month in the East Vietnam Sea.
