Doctors at the Da Nang Family Hospital in the namesake central Vietnamese city have successfully conducted surgery on a six-year-old girl who was born with extra fingers and toes on both hands and both feet, a doctor from the hospital said on Thursday.
It is extremely rare for a child to be born with extra fingers and toes on both hands and both feet, said doctor Nguyen Dinh Hoa, deputy head of the surgery department under the Da Nang Family Hospital.
In late June, H.M., a resident of Quang Nam Province, a Da Nang neighbor, took her daughter to the Da Nang Family Hospital for the removal of the child’s extra fingers and toes.
Each of the child’s hands had six fingers and each of her feet had six toes.
While each of the child’s extra fingers and toes developed normally, they hindered her daily life, particularly when it came to wearing shoes and doing exercise.

According to M., when her daughter was three years old, doctors advised against performing surgery on the child due to her age. Three years later, doctors gave the go-ahead.
Prior to the operation, the hospital carried out recommended testing, consultations, and X-rays. It only took two days for the child to recover enough from the surgery to hold things in her hands without pain.
“As she is young, two teams concurrently performed the surgery on both hands and both feet to reduce the surgery time and prevent side effects from anesthetic,” doctor Hoa noted.
