Police in U Minh Thuong District, Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam have taken a man into custody for allegedly trapping 41 rare turtles in a local national park.
U Minh Thuong District police said on Friday that they caught Nguyen Van Thong, 53, residing in U Minh Thuong District, red-handed transporting the 41 turtles measuring nearly 15 kilograms on Thursday.
All of the trapped animals were endangered species with prioritized protection.

Thong told authorities that he had placed 23 traps in U Minh Thuong National Park and on Wednesday night returned to the national park to take the 41 turtles from the traps.
He was earlier fined VND3 million (US$122.5) for violating regulations on protecting rare and endangered wild animals.
