The French Residence, a symbol of late 19th-century Indochinese architecture in Ho Chi Minh City, opened its doors for a special public tour on Saturday, with over 1,600 tickets sold out in less than an hour, the fastest registration ever recorded.

As part of the European Heritage Days celebration, this annual event, organized by the French Consulate General, aims to highlight the cultural and heritage values of France in the region, while also introducing the international community to unique aspects of Francophone culture.

A legacy of cultural appreciation

The European Heritage Days were first introduced by the French Ministry of Culture in 1984.

On this occasion, France opens the doors to buildings that are normally inaccessible to the public due to their use for administrative, diplomatic, or economic purposes.

The event's success prompted the Council of Europe to expand it across the continent in 1991, and it is now celebrated in nearly 50 countries.

For many years, the European Heritage Days at the French Residence have become a much-anticipated event, drawing thousands of local residents and international visitors.

Located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, the French Residence not only serves as the home and workplace of French Consuls General but also stands as a symbol of the cultural connection between France and Vietnam.

This year's event centers around the theme of "Francophone Community" in honor of France hosting the Francophonie Summit for the first time in 33 years, which will take place on October 4-5.

The French Consulate General expanded the number of visitor slots by 300 compared to previous years, bringing the total to 1,600.

Incredibly, all the tickets were claimed in under an hour, setting a new record.

This remarkable level of interest reflects the public’s enthusiasm for the rare opportunity to explore this impressive residence.

The French Residence not only features exquisite Indochinese architecture but also offers a tranquil setting with centuries-old trees in its lush garden.

These natural and architectural treasures are a testament to the enduring beauty and harmony between nature and human craftsmanship.

Digital tour experience

In an addition for 2024, the French Consulate General is introducing a brand-new digital experience for visitors.

By scanning QR codes placed throughout the residence grounds, attendees can access information about the history and intriguing anecdotes of the French Residence.

The information is available in three languages - Vietnamese, English, and French - allowing for greater accessibility and a deeper understanding of the heritage site.

Visitors also had the chance to admire artworks and furniture from the Nguyen Dynasty, displayed in the reception rooms, and enjoyed a leisurely walk through the 1.5-hectare park filled with trees over a century old.

French delicacies were also available, adding a culinary experience to the event.

Large screens were set up in various locations, displaying videos on Francophone culture and the art of French dining, creating a unique experience that blends historical charm with modern technology.

Beyond exploring the residence’s architecture and history, visitors also had the chance to savor traditional French cuisine.

The 2024 tour offered attendees a taste of this culinary tradition, making the event not just a visual and historical experience but also a sensory one.
