A man hailing from Thai Nguyen Province in northern Vietnam is undergoing treatment at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi after being bitten by a cat, the institution announced the case on Friday.
The 35-year-old patient, who works as a construction worker and has a healthy history, was transferred from Thai Nguyen Hospital C to the Hanoi-based hospital with a follow-up diagnosis of rabies.
About one month before his hospitalization, the patient was bitten on the hand by a cat, which died a week later, but he did not get rabies vaccination.
Approximately two days before his admission, the man had body aches, pain in the spine and lower back.
After bathing, the patient felt irritated and restless and suffered from chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
He became fearful of wind and water, and foamed at the mouth, making it hard for him to swallow.
Doctors at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases diagnosed him with the aggressive form of rabies.
Currently, the patient is still in a coma and on a ventilator.
