The last bear kept in captivity in northern Hai Duong Province was rescued and relocated to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center in Thua Thien-Hue Province, central Vietnam for further care and preservation, Animals Asia announced on Monday.
A family in Hai Duong voluntarily handed over the 120-kilogram bear to the authorities after raising it since 2003 for commercial purposes.
After the handover, veterinarians of Animals Asia, a Hong Kong-based charity which seeks to end cruelness to animals in Asia, checked the health of the bear and anaesthetized it.
They also took its hair and blood samples for testing and found no abnormalities in its health.
Rescuers named the bear Apollo.
Apollo is on an 800-kilometer relocation journey from Hai Duong to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center in Thua Thien-Hue Province and will arrive at the facility on Tuesday afternoon.
In 2020, Hai Duong Province reported that seven bears were kept in captivity at local private farms.
Thanks to the relevant agencies’ efforts, the province has terminated the captive farming of bears.
