A sanitation worker from Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam has found and returned a fortune to its rightful owner.

While cleaning a street, the worker discovered a plastic bag containing a staggering VND100 million (US$4,100) in cash.

Instead of keeping the windfall for herself, the worker made the admirable decision to hand the bag over to the local police force, ensuring its safe return to the owner.

Bui Van Quang, general director of Quang Ngai Urban Environment JSC, for which the honest sanitation worker, Nguyen Thi Thuy Phuong, works, said on Tuesday that the company would commend and reward her.

“This is a good deed. The company is proud to have employees like Nguyen Thi Thuy Phuong,” Quang added.

Phuong, a 43-year-old resident of Son Tinh District, Quang Ngai, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that she and her colleague were cleaning Vo Nguyen Giap Street in Quang Ngai City, the provincial capital, when she spotted the plastic bag.

“As the bag is new, I opened it and saw many stacks of banknotes. I did not count the money but kept it and continued my work,” she recounted.

She thought that its owner would find it missing and would return.

Until the morning of the next day, no one came to receive the money, so she reported the case to her manager, who told her to talk to police officers.

She immediately went to the police station in Tinh An Tay Commune, Quang Ngai City.

Police later found that the money’s owner was Nguyen Van Cuong, a 29-year-old resident in Quang Ngai City and an employee of goods delivery firm Giao Hang Nhanh.

Cuong said the money was submitted by delivery men but he carelessly dropped it and thought that he would never see it again.

Receiving the money back, Cuong showed gratitude to Phuong for her honesty.

Phuong said she always wanted to return the money after spotting it.
