Vietnam celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu battle that marked the victory of the Vietnamese revolutionary army over French colonialists in 1954 in Dien Bien Province, northwestern Vietnam on Tuesday morning, boasting an impressive show of armed forces.
At 7:45 am, a 21-cannon salute was fired to start the ceremony to celebrate 70 years of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.
A military show of various branches of Vietnam’s army was a main highlight of the event.
Cavalry troops, a female military band, female traffic police officers, military officers, firefighters, police officers, maritime police officers, peacekeeping troops, militia members, and military medical officers took part in a parade, which included 12,000 people, to mark the anniversary.

Military helicopters carrying Vietnam’s national flags flew in formation in the sky over the province, spurring the magnanimous atmosphere of the celebration.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials from Vietnam, and 270 international representatives and foreign reporters.

The important event also featured the participation of Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Neth Savoeun, French Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu, and Patricia Miralles, Secretary of State to the Minister for the Armed Forces, with responsibility for veterans and remembrance.
Throngs of people flocked to many streets around Dien Bien Stadium early in the morning to immerse themselves in the special ceremony.

Speaking at the anniversary ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that the Dien Bien Phu Victory is a great historic triumph in Vietnam’s history.
The prime minister also paid tribute to late General Vo Nguyen Giap, who was the mastermind of the Dien Bien Phu battle.
Besides, the government leader underscored that the Party and Vietnamese people are always grateful to the great contributions of the battle’s fallen soldiers.
On behalf of the country, the top Vietnamese official also expressed his gratitude to close partners such as Russia, China, Laos, and Cambodia for their support during the historic battle.
On May 7, 1954, the Vietnamese revolutionary army won a globe-shaking victory over French colonial troops after a 56-day military campaign in Muong Thanh Valley, located in what is now Dien Bien Province.
