An estimated 3.2 million Vietnamese and foreigners took tours to tourist attractions in the Southeast Asian nation during the New Year holiday from Saturday last week to Monday, up 6.6 percent year on year, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
Hotel room occupancy in popular tourist sites reached 95 percent during the period.
International tourists from South Korea, China, Japan, the United States, Europe, and Thailand traveled to Vietnam to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Over 50 percent of the total number of tourists toured Ho Chi Minh City, while the rest traveled to Khanh Hoa Province in south-central Vietnam, Hanoi, and some northern provinces such as Ninh Binh, Ha Giang, and Lao Cai.
Ho Chi Minh City took the limelight in tourism during the holiday as it welcomed 1.65 million visitors and made an estimated VND6.4 trillion (US$261.3 million) in tourism revenue.
The average room occupancy of lodging facilities in the southern metropolis stood at 87 percent in the time span.
Many Vietnamese also visited China, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia to welcome the New Year.
Hanoi took the lead in the number of international tourist arrivals, at 72,000, followed by Ho Chi Minh City, which welcomed more than 46,000 foreign visitors during the holiday.
Besides, Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam received two cruise ships with over 3,700 international passengers aboard on the last day of 2023.
Vietnam looks to attract 17-18 million international travelers and serve 110 million domestic tourists in 2024, while its tourism revenue is expected to amount to VND840 trillion ($34.4 billion).
The country welcomed 12.6 million international tourist arrivals and served an estimated 108 million domestic visitors in 2023, according to statistics released on Friday last week by the General Statistics Office.
