A magnitude-2.8 earthquake occurred in Luong Son District, Hoa Binh Province, bordering Hanoi early on Saturday morning.
The earthquake took place at 0:05 am at a depth of about 10km, according to the Institute of Geophysics under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
People living in the epicenter, which borders suburban districts of Hanoi such as Thach That, Quoc Oai, Chuong My, and My Duc and is only 50-100km from downtown Hanoi, were able to feel slight tremors from the quake.
The Institute of Geophysics assessed that the earthquake posed zero disaster risk, adding that it is continuing to monitor aftershocks.
Hoa Binh Province has experienced many earthquakes in recent years.
At the end of 2022, three earthquakes of magnitude 2.6-4 occurred in Da Bac District.
In February 2021, Tan Lac District reported a magnitude-2.8 tremor.
Hoa Binh, together with other northwestern provinces, reports the highest number and frequency of seismic activities in Vietnam due to numerous active faults, such as the Dien Bien-Muong Lay fault and the Ma River-Tuan Giao-Lai Chau fault.
The northwestern region has recorded significant earthquakes, including the 1935 quake with a magnitude of 6.9 in the Dien Bien basin.
In 1983, a magnitude-6.7 earthquake struck Tuan Giao Town of Tuan Giao District in Dien Bien Province.
In 2001, a magnitude-5.3 earthquake hit Dien Bien Phu City in Dien Bien Province.
In February 2020, another earthquake with the same magnitude occurred in Moc Chau District, Son La Province, causing tremors to Hanoi and many northern provinces.
