Ho Chi Minh City is facing a shortage of 10,000 square meters of spaces to store vehicles seized from violators of traffic regulations, as local impoundment lots have been overloaded, said a representative of the municipal police department.
Thousands of motorcycles and tricycles are densely packed at an impoundment lot managed by police officers in Thu Duc City, located within Ho Chi Minh City.
They have been staying out in the sun for a long time as the impoundment lot has no roof.
Similarly, an impoundment area of the District 7 police bureau on Nguyen Van Quy Street has accommodated thousands of vehicles.
An impoundment area of the Binh Tan District police faces the same fate with long lines of thousands of motorbikes, most of which are old and covered with a thick layer of dust.
At a press conference on Thursday to announce the city’s socio-economic performance in 2023, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Le Manh Ha from the municipal police said traffic police officers handled nearly 651,600 cases of traffic rule breaches s last year, confiscating more than 1,500 cars, nearly 153,500 motorcycles, and some 1,300 tricycles.
Of the total, 128,000 vehicles belonged to residents flouting alcohol concentration regulations, accounting for around 20 percent.
The fines for these lawbreakers were higher than the value of their vehicles, so many violators decided to abandon their assets, according to Ha.
Various traffic police units have taken advantage of vacant spaces at their headquarters to store the vehicles, the official added.
