A 44-year-old egg seller from Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam returned VND1.2 billion (US$48,535) to its rightful owner after it had been lost in a local wet market.
Nguyen Thi Luc, a 44-year-old resident of Vinh Phuc’s Yen Lac District, found a red plastic bag fully of cash mysteriously inside of her van after delivering eggs to a small market in Me Linh District, Hanoi at 10:00 am on Wednesday.
Rather than opening the bag, she asked others in the area if they had seen anyone put the bag inside the van, but no one had.
“Some people thought I was joking, but I insisted they come to see it for themselves,” Luc recounted.
Upon an examination, Luc and some market vendors discovered several stacks of Vietnamese bills inside.
“I was frightened and nearly fainted,” she said.
Subsequently, she enlisted the help of those around her to report the discovery to local police.
Luc emphasized that the money did not belong to her and vowed to find a way to return it.

Given the substantial sum, she acknowledged that it could represent someone’s lifetime savings.
“Furthermore, I was cautious as there are numerous scams and illicit money circulating nowadays,” she added.
Police officers then invited witnesses to observe the counting process.
It took them nearly two hours to count the VND1.2 billion in cash.
Following the count, authorities were able to identify L.D.S., a local resident, as the owner of the bag.
“S.’s son accidently placed the money in Luc’s van,” stated Lieutenant Colonel Le Duy Hoa, a police leader.
Upon verification, police completed the necessary documentation and procedures to return the money to S..
