Residents in Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City have voiced their concerns over a situation where the trees along Nguyen Thai Son Street are suffocating from cement poured over their roots.

Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper saw that these trees found it hard to develop as concrete was poured directly upon the tree roots.

Along Nguyen Thai Son Street is over 20 trees which are four to five meters high each. Some of them have their feet deformed due to the concrete.

The concrete seems to suffocate the trees and may cause the trees to die in the near future.

Some residents even used large chains to tie signboards to tree trunks, causing the bark to peel off and dry in hot weather.

Bui Viet, a 32-year-old resident in Go Vap District, said the city is in dire need of green spaces to purify the air and provide shade, while the number of new trees is modest.

“But many trees along this street are showing signs of being forced to die,” Viet added.

A representative of Ho Chi Minh City Greenery Parks Co. Ltd. said the company would quickly review and report the situation to the municipal Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center to work out corrective measures.
