Danang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC confirmed on Friday that it had rewarded a 57-year-old airport cleaner for doing a good deed of returning a lost backpack with over US$54,900 worth of cash inside to a Japanese passenger.
Tran Thi Huong, a native of Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam, works for Hoan My Company, a Vietnamese provider of airport cleaning services.
On Wednesday morning, while Huong was cleaning at Da Nang International Airport in the namesake city in central Vietnam, she found a black backpack put on a chair in the waiting area.
There were no flights scheduled to depart from or arrive at the airport at the time.
Guessing that someone forgot the baggage, Huong informed airport authorities of the lost object.
Airport authorities examined the backpack and discovered more than $54,900 worth of cash inside, including 81 US$100 banknotes, 735 notes of 10,000 Japanese yen, and several other small-denomination notes.
They sealed the backpack of the unknown owner and transferred it to the airport’s customs department for further steps.
On Thursday evening, the customs department handed over the lost assets to a Japanese visitor in the presence of Huong and a team of airport authorities.
This Japanese passenger said that they arrived at the Da Nang airport in the wee hours of Wednesday to fly to South Korea and forgot their backpack at the international terminal.
The airport cleaner was praised and rewarded by Danang International Terminal Investment and Operation JSC and Hoan My Company for her good act.
During her six years of working at the airport, Huong revealed that she had found and returned many belongings such as smartphones, laptops, and wallets that passengers lost.
