Storm No. 2, the second to affect Vietnam this year, could enter the Gulf of Tonkin and make landfall in several northern Vietnamese locales, including Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City at noon on Monday, bringing heavy rainfall to the northern and the north–central province of Thanh Hoa, said the national weather agency.
The storm, known internationally as Prapiroon, picked up strength and made landfall on the Chinese island of Hainan on Sunday night.
At 7:00 am on Monday, the system was centered on Hainan Island, packing winds of 88 kilometers per hour.
The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting said that the storm may move north-west to approach the mainland of Hai Phong and Quang Ninh on Tuesday morning after entering the Gulf of Tonkin on Monday.
Prapiroon is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area later in the northern part of China’s Guangxi Province.
Due to the impact of the storm, powerful winds are expected along the coast of Quang Ninh early Tuesday morning.
The northern waters of the Gulf of Tonkin, including the two Vietnamese islands of Bach Long Vi and Co To, may see four-meter-high waves.
Heavy rainfall of 100-200mm and thunderstorms could lash the northern region and Thanh Hoa from Monday night to Wednesday.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in the remaining parts of Vietnam during Monday.
The weather agency also warned of possible flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas and inundation in low-lying and urban locations, adding that whirlwinds, lightning, hail, and gusty winds may happen during rainfall.
