Traffic police in Quang Ngai Province, central Vietnam said on Monday that they fined a young woman VND7 million (US$278.5) and revoked her driver’s license for three months after she was found riding her motorcycle with her hands off the handlebars, making a heart shape.
A video of her stunt spread on social media, revealing that she was riding her motorcycle on the Thach Bich Bridge in Quang Ngai City of the namesake province.
Local traffic police later identified the social media account that uploaded the video and found the woman in the clip to be N.T.V.H., a resident of Ha Tinh Province.
At the police station, H. admitted her wrongdoing and promised not to repeat it.
Traffic violations by young people, teenagers, and students are on the rise in Quang Ngai.
In the first half of the year, local authorities handled 1,400 cases of teenagers and students flouting traffic rules, fining them some VND1.5 billion ($59,549).
At a recent meeting of the Quang Ngai Traffic Safety Committee, Tran Phuoc Hien, vice-chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, agreed that penalties should be imposed on officials and civil servants who let their underage children drive vehicles and breach traffic regulations to set an example to citizens.
Quang Ngai City police officers have gone plainclothes to detect and punish those driving at excessive speeds or causing chaos on the streets.
Local residents have wholeheartedly advocated such measures.
