Vietnam’s box office set a new record with some VND4.7 trillion (US$184 million) in ticket sales in 2024 thanks to a series of high-grossing films, Box Office Vietnam said on Thursday.
The nation’s box office earned $150 million in 2023, compared to the 2019 record of VND4.1 trillion ($161 million).
Among the top box office earners released in 2024 were ‘Mai,’ ‘Lat Mat 7’ (Face Off 7: One Wish), 'Lam Giau Voi Ma' (Betting with Ghost), and 'Linh Mieu' (Spirit Whisker - The Revenant).
The success of these movies, which mainly depict family life and generational family conflicts, such as ‘Mai,’ ‘Lat Mat 7,’ and ‘Chi Dau’ (The Real Sister), shows a trend of the Vietnamese audience favoring family-related topics.
‘Mai,’ directed by Vietnamese comedian, actor, and television presenter Tran Thanh, took the lead in generating revenue for the Vietnamese box office in 2024, raking in VND551 billion ($21.6 million), followed by ‘Lat Mat 7’ by film producer and director Ly Hai with VND482 billion ($18.9 million).
Meanwhile, other films portraying topics outside family life or being about adventure and exploration by young people reported poor box office sales.
A few box office flops included B4S, Mong Vuot (Claws), Mua He Dep Nhat (That Summer Will Be Back), and Kinh Van Hoa, according to Box Office Vietnam.
Apart from the attraction of Vietnam-made movies, South Korean film 'Exhuma' and 'Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Earth Symphony' were listed among the top box office hits in the country last year. 'Exhuma' brought in VND212 billion ($8.3 million), while the other film grossed VND147.5 billion ($5.8 million) at the Vietnamese box office.
Box Office Vietnam concluded that the nation’s box office in 2024 had some similarities with that in 2023 as movies directed by Tran Thanh and Ly Hai, or Doraemon-branded films, maintained their strong allure.
