With one month to go before the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, many supermarkets and retailers in Ho Chi Minh City are rolling out numerous discounts to encourage families to prepare for Tet celebrations despite an ongoing economic downturn.
In order to spur shopping during the current period of financial distress, multiple retailers are proactively beefing up the volume of affordable products.
A representative of Saigon Co.op stated that over 800 stores nationwide have launched discount and promotional programs to help customers prepare for Tet more affordably.
At a Co.opmart supermarket in District 1, Nguyen Thi Lien, 30, said that she was selecting Tet products and gifts at reasonable prices for her relatives and friends.
After three years of working in Ho Chi Minh City, she plans to return to her hometown in Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam to celebrate Tet.
Affordable Tet gift baskets are in high demand, selling rapidly.
Mai Anh, a realty broker in Ho Chi Minh City, said financial pressures have forced her to cut back on Tet spending this year compared to previous years.
Just a few years ago, she spent some VND20 million (US$786) on Tet baskets for her partners and customers.
Despite financial difficulties, she still plans to pack her house with Tet products for the upcoming celebration, while tightening her budget.
According to the Saigon Co.op representative, the company has teamed up with trade partners to offer discounts of up to 20 percent on Tet gift baskets.
The Co.opmart and Co.opXtra store chains have sold over 10 million gift baskets in the two weeks since they hit store shelves.

Saigon Co.op began enhancing its promotional program on Thursday with over 3,500 Tet items on sale at a discount.
These items include confectionery, traditional sugar-preserved fruits, lap xuong (dry-cured sausage), beverages, clothes, and decorations.
Vegetables, eggs, and fresh meat have been marked down by up to 25 percent and products from Xuan Hong, Mondelez Kinh Do, Ba Huan, Vissan, Sapporo, Pepsi, and Coca Cola are also on sale.
Saigon Co.op’s discount and promotional campaign is meant to help ease customers' financial burden during this period leading up to Tet.
Saigon Co.op’s supermarket chains such as Co.opmart and Co.opXtra are boosting delivery services as well as lengthening delivery distances to ramp up consumption.
Apart from its promotional program at supermarkets, Saigon Co.op is offering discounts in its online stores.
Many discounts are available until January 28.
Workers will be entitled to a nine-day break for the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, from January 25, to February 2.
