Up to 63 industrial park workers from two companies in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning following their Friday lunch served by the same food service provider, a local official confirmed the same day.
At Nghi Loc District General Hospital, 42 workers were admitted between 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm.
The patients displayed symptoms such as headaches, nausea, facial flushing, chest tightness, fatigue, and skin rashes on their face, neck, and arms, according to Pham Ngoc Quy, head of the provincial Department of Food Safety and Hygiene.
Their health condition later stabilized following intravenous treatment and care.
Aside from those at Nghi Loc General Hospital, 12 workers were treated at Nghe An 115 General Hospital, and nine others at Cua Dong General Hospital.
These 63 affected workers work at two different companies in the WHA and VSIP Industrial Parks.
All of them consumed meals provided by the same catering service.
Their lunch included rice, braised pork with radish, fried Indian mackerel, stir-fried pickled mustard greens with pork, stir-fried cabbage, sour soup, and oranges.
Quy elaborated that the catering company served over 1,000 workers for lunch that day, adding that food samples were collected for testing to identify the cause of the suspected poisoning.
“All patients are recovering well, and some have already been discharged,” said the official.
The food safety department has been asked to work with the WHA Industrial Park management authority to inform all workers who ate the same lunch to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
