Torrential rains with precipitation of up to 500mm are predicted to smash parts of central Vietnam for several days from Tuesday, while the northern region may see a cold spell, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Prolonged rain, from moderate to heavy and torrential levels, will cover the central and south-central parts of Vietnam from Tuesday night until Friday and will likely persist after that, the center warned on Monday.
Rainfall will range from 100mm to 300mm in most of these regions, even 500mm in some localities.
The rainy weather will pose risks of flooding in urban zones, low-lying areas along rivers, and land- and rockslides in mountainous regions.
Meanwhile, the northern part will be hit by a cold spell for several days from Monday, during which the lowest temperatures will be 14-17 degrees Celsius in plain areas, 11-13 degrees Celsius in mountainous regions, and below 10 degrees Celsius in high mountainous localities.
In Hanoi, the temperatures during the cold weather period will range from 14 to 20 degrees Celsius.
The cold front will also affect the north-central region, where the coldest localities will have temperatures of 15-18 degrees Celsius.
Another cold air mass will likely enter the northern region around Friday, prolonging and intensifying the cold weather there, the center said.
The center also warned that most parts of the East Vietnam Sea will have winds of up to 61kph and gusts of 88kph on Monday and Tuesday, due to the development of the northeast monsoon.
Similar conditions are expected in the waters from Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to the southernmost province of Ca Mau.
The sea in these areas will be rough, with waves ranging from three to six meters in height.
The center warned that all vessels at sea will be affected by this weather pattern.
