Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, in collaboration with Vinh International Airport in north-central Nghe An Province, on Thursday organized a drill to practice firefighting and rescue operations for aircraft requiring a diversion and emergency landing at Vinh Airport.
The hypothetical situation for the drill involved Noi Bai receiving a notification from the Air Traffic Control that a plane on a domestic route was experiencing a hydraulic system failure and requested emergency landing at Noi Bai.
The pilot asked the airport to support the landing at 8:39 am.
The aircraft was carrying 180 passengers, eight flight crew members, and two metric tons of cargo.
Accordingly, the airport quickly activated its complete emergency plan and mobilized forces and vehicles to handle the situation.
However, at 8:37 am the airport was informed that the bad weather at Noi Bai International Airport restricted the pilot’s visibility, so the flight crew asked to divert and land at Vinh International Airport.
The Nghe An-based airport then took emergency action to receive the aircraft.
As soon as the plane landed at Vinh Airport, due to a hydraulics fault, the front landing gear did not work properly.
When the aircraft touched down, its nose landing gear collapsed, causing friction between the nose of the plane and the surface of the runway, leading to a fire. The aircraft stopped at the end of the runway.
Rescuers quickly approached the burning aircraft for rescue and firefighting operations.
After rescuing all the passengers and flight crew members, and putting out the flames, forces relocated the plane away from the runway to reopen the airport.

This was the first drill to be co-held by Noi Bai International Airport and Vinh International Airport. It featured the participation of 200 people and 22 vehicles.
Speaking at the drill, Nguyen Duc Hung, deputy general director of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), emphasized the importance of drills to make the airports under ACV more proactive and effective in any emergency case.
