A new strong cold front is expected to hit northern Vietnam this weekend, bringing extended cold and rainy weather until at least February 26, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

In recent days, Hanoi and northeastern provinces have been dealing with prolonged drizzle and thick fog, leading to high humidity and uncomfortable damp conditions.

Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecasting department at the national weather center, predicted this phenomenon will persist until the weekend.

Between Thursday and Friday, the region will possibly continue to see light rain, drizzle, and fog due to weak easterly cold air combined with westerly upper winds.

Rain and fog will be most intense at night and in the early morning, with overcast skies persisting throughout the day.

However, the northwestern provinces could experience sunshine in the afternoon.

Temperatures in Hanoi and northern provinces will drop to 14-17 degrees Celsius at night, with some mountainous areas falling below 13 degrees Celsius.

During the day, Hanoi and the northeastern region will range between 17 and 19 degrees Celsius, while the northwest will see 19-22 degrees Celsius, with provinces like Dien Bien and Son La reaching up to 26 degrees Celsius.

Similar drizzly and foggy conditions are expected in the north-central region.

From Saturday, as a strong cold front moves in, humidity levels may decrease.

The cold spell will bring scattered light rain to the northern and north-central regions from February 22 to 24, followed by showers and thunderstorms on February 25-26.

Mountainous and midland areas will endure severe cold from the night of February 23 to February 26, while the Red River Delta and north-central provinces will see chilly conditions.

Hanoi is forecast to remain cloudy with light rain and possible thunderstorms from February 22 to 25, with temperatures dropping to 13-15 degrees Celsius.

Overcast and rainy weather is likely to continue until February 26 before gradually giving way to sunnier and warmer days starting February 27.
