Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a government meeting on Monday in Hanoi to discuss preparations for the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting, which Vietnam will host on Phu Quoc Island off the coast of southern Kien Giang Province.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Tran Hong Ha, Le Thanh Long, Ho Duc Phoc, and Bui Thanh Son, along with key ministers overseeing finance, construction, environment, and agriculture.

Kien Giang officials provided updates on waste and wastewater treatment plants and clean water supply systems, plus expansion and upgrades of Phu Quoc International Airport – projects initiated after PM Chinh's visit to this Mekong Delta province in March 2024.

While Phu Quoc's existing infrastructure is deemed suitable for hosting APEC 2027, further investments are necessary to ensure its success.

PM Chinh emphasized the significance of hosting APEC 2027, highlighting its role in fulfilling Vietnam's political objectives and promoting Kien Giang and Phu Quoc's image globally.

The government leader stressed the urgency of preparations, given the limited time frame.

He assigned Deputy PM Nguyen Chi Dung to oversee logistics, infrastructure, and venue preparation, Deputy PM Bui Thanh Son to manage the summit’s agenda and program planning, and Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha to handle land and forestry matters.

PM Chinh urged Kien Giang Province to prioritize land clearance and project site selection based on existing planning and minimize any revisions solely for the summit.

For key projects, the government leader outlined specific investment strategies.

Public investment will be used for clean water supply projects, including reservoirs and water treatment plants.

The build-operate-transfer model will be used for wastewater and solid waste treatment plants.

Airport expansion in Phu Quoc City and Rach Gia City will be open to private investors under public-private partnership models, with Kien Giang leading investment calls.

PM Chinh also supported the construction of a new convention center in Phu Quoc, with potential additions of a museum and an exhibition hall.

He emphasized careful planning and cost-effectiveness, ensuring long-term benefits and tourism potential.

Public-private partnerships are encouraged, with strict oversight to prevent corruption.

Kien Giang will oversee transportation infrastructure connecting the airport to summit venues.

PM Chinh stressed that all investments should serve both the summit's needs and the long-term development of Kien Giang and Phu Quoc.
