The Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee in Hanoi announced on Sunday evening a plan to relocate 16 trees and replace nine diseased ones as part of the renovation of the Ly Thai To Flower Garden.
The district administration stated that Ly Thai To Flower Garden is now home to 100 trees of 20 main species, noting that during the renovation of the flower garden, the district will not do harm to valuable and long-standing trees. It will only replace and relocate small trees with no value and diseased trees.
The district will plant 30 new trees suited to Hanoi’s climate. Upon completion, the total number of shade trees in the Ly Thai To Flower Garden will reach 114, an increase of 14 trees compared to before the renovation, according to a statement from the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee.
Regarding the renovation plan, Hoan Kiem District stated that the flower garden will be rearranged into three main zones: a 5,637-square-meter ceremonial area, a 3,033-square-meter octagonal yard area, and a 2,789-square-meter flower garden area.
A Km0 milestone will be placed at the center of the ceremonial yard.
For the octagonal yard area, Hoan Kiem District will complete the landscaping with trees and lawns.
In the flower garden area, the district will renovate landscapes and walkways, and install a floor-mounted water spraying system.
Sprinklers will be installed beneath the surface to ensure the ground remains flat and will not affect the activities of residents and visitors in the flower garden.

The Ly Thai To Flower Garden renovation project is expected to begin in April and be completed by October this year.
Previously, there was information that Hoan Kiem District had proposed cutting and relocating 25 trees to renovate the Ly Thai To Flower Garden near Hoan Kiem Lake.
The information triggered a strong reaction from the community and experts. Some pundits argued that this would infringe upon the sacred space and the natural beauty of Hoan Kiem Lake.
Many opinions stated that Hoan Kiem Lake is not only a tourist destination but also a cultural, historical, and spiritual symbol of Hanoi and Vietnam. Any changes to the area should be carefully considered and should have the community’s consensus.
In response to the information, a leader of the Hoan Kiem District investment and construction project management board told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the district would only relocate and replace some trees within the Ly Thai To Flower Garden
“We will relocate [some trees] to a nursery and move some to more suitable locations to create a better landscape. There will be no tree cutting. Diseased or underdeveloped trees will be replaced with other trees, but we won’t cut them down,” the official said.
The board is working with the Department of Construction to reach an agreement on the tree relocation. The Department of Construction will later report the tree relocation proposal to the Hanoi People’s Committee for approval.
After the renovation, the green tree and lawn area is exepected to increase by 400-500 square meters.
A leader of the Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee Office confirmed that the district did not have a plan to cut or relocate 25 trees.
