National radio station Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has purchased the telecast rights of the 2018 Asian Games (Asiad) and will air all competitions via television, radio, and online platforms.
VOV confirmed on Tuesday afternoon it had signed a deal with South Korea’s KJSM World Corporation regarding Asiad broadcasting rights across the Vietnamese territory.
The exact price was not announced. However, it is believed that the deal cost no more than US$1.7 million.
Starting on August 22, Vietnamese viewers will be able to legitimately watch all competitions of the Games via VTC digital television, a subsidiary of VOV.
The much-awaited match between Vietnam and Bahrain in the round of 16 of the men’s football category will be aired on VTC3 at 4:00 pm on August 23.
Audiences can also listen to live commentaries on VOV channels and watch the events online via the websites vov.vn, vtc.vn, and the VTCnow mobile app.
Nguyen The Ky, general director of VOV, stated that Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup and military-run telecom group Viettel had contributed to the signing of the deal.
The Asian Games is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia.
This year’s edition is held in Jakarta and Palembang in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, with the participation of more than 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and territories.
The broadcasting rights of this year’s Asiad were originally offered at $3 million in Vietnam.
Although the price was later lowered to $1.8 million, no Vietnamese television agreed to purchase the package until VOV closed the deal.
