Vietnam sealed a place in the finals of the 2020 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-23 Championship after routing Thailand 4-0 in their last qualifier in Hanoi on Tuesday evening.
The third victory in a row enabled Vietnam to top Group K and secure a berth in the final tournament in Thailand next year.
Even though results in the qualifying game did not mean much to Thailand, who already qualified as hosts, the guests launched a fierce start at My Dinh National Stadium, but it was the Vietnamese who took the lead with a brilliant nutmeg goal from Ha Duc Chinh.
The Golden Dragons maintained the lead at half-time.
Despite the War Elephants’ attempt to take back the game after the break, Nguyen Hoang Duc struck in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0 for Vietnam.
Only minute later, Thailand’s key forward Supachai Jaided was shown a straight red card, and it was when the away team totally lost control of the match.
The young Golden Stars broke the Thais' net two more times with a quick kick from close range from Nguyen Thanh Chung in the 63rd minute and a 94-minute goal from Tran Thanh Son.
