The Vietnamese national women’s basketball team made history on Sunday by beating their Filipina rivals with a score of 21-16 to claim the first-ever gold medal in the 3x3 category at the ongoing 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Cambodia.

The Vietnamese basketballers, including Huynh Thi Ngoan, Nguyen Thi Tieu Duy, Truong Thao My, and Truong Thao Vy, entered the final match with the single-minded determination after defeating Indonesia 21-18 in the semifinals on Sunday morning.

They got the first score and forced the Filipina opponents to get involved in a tense chase.

At last year’s SEA Games in Vietnam, the Vietnamese women’s basketball team lost to Thailand in the final match and received the silver medal.

Eight countries, namely Vietnam, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia, were participating in the 3x3 basketball category at the 2023 SEA Games, hosted by Cambodia in Phnom Penh City and Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, and Kep Provinces from May 5 to 17.

The Vietnamese delegation has 1,003 members, the biggest number in Vietnam’s sports history to be dispatched to a SEA Games edition.

They include over 702 athletes competing in 31 sports, 190 coaches, 10 experts, 64 doctors, and other staff members.

The Vietnamese sports contingent is targeting a top-three finish with 90-120 gold medals.
