Vietnam beat Indonesia 6-5 in a penalty shootout at the 2023 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U23 Championship held in Thailand on Saturday to defend their championship title.
The match was exciting due to stunning strikes of an eye for an eye by the two teams.
Indonesia threatened Vietnam in the 25th minute, when Rifky Dwi Septiawan took a free kick from a distance of nearly 24 meters. However, the stunning shot was saved by goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan.
Minh Quang, in the 33rd minute, struck the ball to the rival’s goal, but it ricocheted off the post.
The Vietnamese football player attempted to save the kick, but he was fouled inside the penalty area by an Indonesian defender.
On the penalty spot, Quoc Viet could not defeat goalkeeper Ernando Ari.
The match continued on an emotional roller coaster as the two teams made many fouls to attack and block kicks.
Vietnamese goalkeeper Chuan made two spectacular saves in the 54th and 58th minutes.
In the 67th minute, Quoc Viet had another opportunity inside the box, but he once again failed to deliver.
The two team kept attacking until the end of the second half.
Both teams then entered 30 minutes of extra time, but they failed to get any opportunity to score goals.
The match was eventually decided on penalties, with Vietnam winning 6-5 to maintain their reigning in youth football in Southeast Asia.
Hosts Thailand bagged the bronze medal at the AFF U23 Championship after defeating Malaysia 4-3 in a penalty shootout on the same day.
