Cong An Hanoi FC claimed Vietnam’s top-flight 2023 V-League 1 title following a 1-1 draw against Thanh Hoa FC on Sunday night.

Before the final match, Cong An Hanoi, managed by the Hanoi Department of Public Security, were leading the standings with 37 points, closely trailed by defending champions Hanoi FC with 35 points.

Their goal advantage meant that a draw would suffice for them to clinch the championship.

However, driven by a desire to secure the title with a win, Cong An Hanoi played with great determination against Thanh Hoa on their home ground at Hang Day Stadium in the Vietnamese capital.

In the first half, the home team dominated and managed to break the deadlock in the 42nd minute thanks to Gustavo Henrique’s goal.

However, they unexpectedly allowed Bruno Cantanhede to equalize for Thanh Hoa in the 64th minute.

Following that, the home team opted for a more cautious approach, ensuring they preserved the score until the end of the match rather than taking unnecessary risks.

In another match on the same day, Hanoi FC secured a 3-2 victory over Viettel FC, operated by the eponymous military-run telecom corporation.

As a result, both Cong An Hanoi and Hanoi FC ended the season on 38 points each.

However, Cong An Hanoi claimed the title due to their superior goal difference.

This accomplishment is noteworthy because they achieved it in their debut season after being promoted to the V-League 1 from the second-tier V-League 2.

They were the second team to accomplish such a feat, with the first being Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC during the 2003 season.

The 2023 V-League 1 is the 67th professional season of the highest division in Vietnamese football.
