More than 220 players from 95 countries and regions are competing in the 2024 Teqball World Championships, held in Vietnam for the first time, promising an exciting competition.
Organized by the International Teqball Federation (FITEQ) in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports, the event runs from Wednesday to Sunday at Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street.
During a press conference on Tuesday, the organizers confirmed this is the first time the championship has been held in Vietnam.
The tournament features 221 athletes from 95 countries and territories, with five competition categories: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.
Matches began at 10:00 am on Wednesday, followed by the opening ceremony at 6:30 pm.
Vietnam has sent athletes to compete in all events.
All matches will be broadcast on sports channels such as HTV, Eurosport, and FITEQ’s YouTube channel.
“Teqball is a sport well-suited to the physique and skills of the Vietnamese people,” said Nguyen Nam Nhan, deputy director of the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City.

"Ho Chi Minh City has seen rapid growth in this sport, prompting the municipal People’s Committee to partner with FITEQ to host international-level tournaments that not only engage the public but also create opportunities for athletes."
FITEQ chairman Gabor Borsanyi praised Ho Chi Minh City’s ability to host the event, affirming the goal of incorporating teqball into global competitions like the Olympics and the Asian Games.
The Vietnamese national team mainly consists of athletes from Ho Chi Minh City, many of whom have backgrounds in sepak takraw and football.
Over the past two months, the team has trained in Hungary, which is considered the birthplace of the sport.
Despite thorough preparation, the Vietnamese team’s chances of achieving positive results remain uncertain given their inexperience on the global stage.
“We'll give it our all to deliver thrilling matches for the home crowd,” said Vo Bao Huy, a member of the team.
“The Vietnamese team may not be as strong as some of our competitors, but we’re determined to perform well and go as far as we can.”
