A physically challenged man conquered a 10-kilometer challenge during a half-marathon race held in Tien Giang Province, southern Vietnam on Saturday while maneuvering a wheelchair.

Nguyen Quang Hung, a 36-year-old resident of Tay Ninh Province, some 140 kilometers from Tien Giang, became the only racer to compete in the My Tho Sunset Run 2024, originally meant as a half-marathon, while being confined to a wheelchair.

Despite the searing heat, runners still maintained their pace, while the image of a man in a wheelchair showing his sheer persistence during the running race surprised many supporters.

Hung moved swiftly in his wheelchair in the 10-kilometer race, stealing the limelight during the competition.

He recounted that he rode his motorcycle and carried his wheelchair from Tay Ninh to Tien Giang early in the morning to join the race in My Tho.

When he was young, he suffered a high fever that left him paralyzed.

Over the past few years, he has participated in several running races after noticing a decline in his health.

Using his hands to push the wheels of his wheelchair, he propels himself forward during the races.

"The races make me feel better and help me appreciate life more," he said.

"Racing has also challenged me to push beyond my physical limits. Completing a 10km race in a wheelchair is a significant achievement for me," Hung shared.

“I am not sure to bring an inspiring story, but I hope that people in the same situation will feel optimistic and take up running to improve their health.”
