Tam Giang Lagoon is located in Tam Giang – Cau Hai, the largest freshwater lagoon system in the central Vietnamese city of Hue.

Though most tourists who visit Hue never make it to the lagoon, its tranquility and hospitable locals render it the perfect place to relax for a day.

Tam Giang – Cau Hai Lagoon and Ru Cha mangrove forest were established as Tam Giang – Cau Hai Wetland Nature Reserve by the People's Committee of Thua Thien-Hue Province, which administers Hue City.

The wetland nature reserve has two partitions — O Lau and Con Te-Ru Cha — and 23 fisheries resources protection zones, situated in the administrative boundaries of 23 communes and towns in five districts in Thua Thien-Hue, with a total area of 2,071 hectares.

The establishment of this wetland reserve aims to restore the habitat, specific ecosystems, biodiversity, and fisheries resources of Tam Giang – Cau Hai Lagoon, including the seagrass bed ecosystem in Con Te area in Huong Tra District, the freshwater aquatic carpets in the O Lau River in Phong Dien District, and the mangrove forest ecosystem in the Ru Cha site in Huong Tra District.

Ru Cha is only about ten kilometers away from the city center, making it extremely convenient for tourists. Although the area is not large, it offers diverse flora that is sure to please the pickiest tourists.

The establishment of the nature reserve also helps preserve and unleash the full potential of Tam Giang – Cau Hai Lagoon, especially in promoting travel tours.
