A hundred works of calligraphy by Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh are being exhibited in Ho Chi Minh City.

The exhibition celebrates the publication of his new book ‘Huong thom que me’ (The Fragrance of Motherland), a collection of Hanh’s calligraphy written in Vietnamese and English.

The open-door display, held at Hai An Bookstore in District 1 from Saturday until the end of next Monday, showcases 100 calligraphic works by the Zen master as well as a selection of 145 books he authors.

Visitors can also join Zen-themed activities including tea ceremonies, meditation music performances, and Zen practice lessons taught by Hanh’s disciples.

“My calligraphy features ink, tea, breathing, mindfulness, and concentration,” Hanh once said of his works.

“Calligraphy is a form of meditation.

"I write words or sentences that can remind people of the practice of mindfulness."

The monk’s calligraphy had been well-received during previous exhibitions in France, Germany, Canada, the U.S., Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, organizers said.

Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, 95, has traveled widely across the world, spreading the Buddha’s teachings on compassion and peace.

He is also known for authoring hundreds of Buddhist and Zen books popular with both Vietnamese and English readers.

Hanh has been staying in the central city of Hue since the start of his fifth return to Vietnam in October 2018.
