The quintessence of Vietnamese traditional crafts will be honored during a five-day festival scheduled to kick off tomorrow, April 28, in the central city of Hue.
Around 200 artisans who pursue 40 traditional crafts across Vietnam will gather at the sixth biennial 2015 Hue Traditional Craft Festival, themed “Tinh hoa nghề Việt” (Quintessence of Vietnamese craft) and which runs until May 2.
The event aims to promote the image of Hue, the capital city of Thua Thien-Hue Province, and to introduce outstanding products of traditional craft villages in Vietnam, according to the organizers.
The Hue Traditional Craft Festival will also honor artisans and traditional crafts such as embroidery and those that make jewelry, bronze handicrafts, ceramics, conical hat, lantern, textile, and garment.
Hue culinary specialties will also be honored in the event, highlighted by a “craft honoring space” at the Nguyen Dinh Chieu pedestrian zone.
The 2015 Hue Traditional Craft Festival has chosen the Zeng (a type of brocade of ethnic people in Hue) weaving as its key craft for honoring. Outfits made from Zeng will also be showcased within the framework of the festival.
Zeng, an invention of the Ta Oi minority group, has stunned local fashion designers for its creativity with the main colors of black and red.
Ta Oi people are able to make Zeng with more than 50 different types of pattern.
The festival will see the participation of local famous designers, including Minh Hanh and Lan Huong, plus guest designers including Patis Tesoro from the Philippines, MoHom Loikhamleng from Myanmar, Eric Choong from Malaysia, Milo Emilio Migliavacca from Indonesia, and Wisharawish Akarasantisook from Thailand.
Other activities including a science workshop, painting and fine arts exhibitions, antiques display, rock show, traditional craft competitions and street performances also promise to light up the event.
On Sunday, some 300 local youths joined a community dance performance at the 3/2 Park by the city’s Huong River as an early activity to welcome the festival.
The performance had drawn the attention of not only local residents but also foreign tourists in the city.
