A young man in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong died after spending six hours in a secret underground shelter where he had used electronic equipment to conduct gambling fraud, police reported. Local police are investigating the gambling case that led to the death of 24-year-old Bi Van Trung, of Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province last Saturday. On the afternoon of October 19, Nguyen Ngoc Thanh, 28, of Nghia Thang Commune, Dak R’Lap District, brought 20 people together to gamble in a secret area of the commune. The day before, Thanh and Ngo Vu Truong Hai, 21, of the same commune, discussed a cheating scheme with Trung that would benefit members of the gambling den. They dug a hole at a depth of 1 meter underground, where Trung stayed and used electronic devises to help the gamblers cheat. Four wooden boards were used to cover the top of the hole, above which the gambling took place. Some holes had been punctured in the wood to allow air to enter the small space. Trung got into the hole at about 12 pm on Saturday, when the gambling was about to begin. He asked Hai to remove the wooden boards and get him out of the hole once all the gamblers had left. At 6 pm the same day, Hai heard the ringing of a mobile phone from the hole. He opened the lid of the shelter to find Trung unconscious. Trung died en route to the hospital. Initial investigations showed that Trung had suffocated to death. Police seized three mobile phones, three sets of remote electronic gambling control units, many other devises, and VND10 million (US$480) in cash. The gambling den entertained 30-40 gamblers each day. The fee for entry was VND100,000-150,000 per person, paid to Thanh, the den’s organizer.
