The Japanese government is strongly promoting its healthcare and preventive medicine industries to overseas markets in recent years, and Vietnam is among the target countries, a trade official said.

Along with the economic development, the life of Vietnamese people have been much improved but they area also facing new health risks, which are chances for Japanese healthcare businesses to grab, Yasuzumi Hirotaka, director of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) in Ho Chi Minh City said Friday.

Hirotaka spoke to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the JETRO-run Japan Healthful Lifestyle Exhibition in the southern Vietnamese metropolis, which runs until Sunday.

Among the biggest risks threatening the Vietnamese are heart disease, diabetes, and obesity among children, according to the JETRO official.

In the meantime, with higher incomes, Vietnamese consumers are willing to pay for better, premium healthcare services, and Japanese businesses want to meet such demands, he added.

Japan is known as the country with the world’s longest life expectancy thanks to its highly developed healthcare industry.

Some Japanese healthcare businesses in fact started entering Vietnam a decade ago, but Japan’s government now wants a more organized and planned entry.

The three-day Japan Healthful Lifestyle Exhibition attracts 35 Japanese businesses, which make healthcare products for children, adult, and the elders, as well as producing healthy food and personal medical equipment.

These firms all want to develop business in Vietnam, and some of which have indeed set up Vietnamese dealerships and have brands that are popular to local consumers, according to Hirotaka.
