A test flight operated by Vietnamese airline Bamboo Airways landed at Ca Mau Airport in Ca Mau Province, the southern tip of Vietnam, from Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday in preparation for the opening of the route linking the province and Hanoi later this month.

This was the airline’s first flight to Ca Mau Airport, making it the most recent airport added to the list of 22 Vietnamese airports tapped by Bamboo Airways.

Ca Mau Airport has one runway, which is the shortest in the country. It measures 1.5 kilometers long and 30 meters wide.

Prior to the opening of the route later this month, Ca Mau Airport primarily serves flights linking Ho Chi Minh City using small planes capable of transporting 70 passengers.

The airport welcomes 35,000-40,000 passengers each year and boasts an annual capacity of 200,000 passengers.

“We have upgraded the airport and finished training employees in skills related to flight services and fire prevention and fighting, as well as furnishing Ca Mau Airport with aircraft tugs, ladders, and airport buses,” said Pham Thanh Lam, director of Ca Mau Airport.

The airport is now able to handle E190 jet aircraft, which can carry up to 98 passengers, he added.

The launch of the air service will help shorten the travel time between the southernmost province and the northern city to just two hours and 15 minutes.

Besides, the air route will contribute to driving tourism in and attracting investors to the Mekong Delta province, according to Lam Van Bi, vice-chairman of the Ca Mau People’s Committee.

Bi also noted that he expected the airline to open more air routes to the province in the coming months.

Ca Mau Province is set to welcome the first passengers on board a Bamboo Airways flight departing from Hanoi on April 29.
