Officials from Quang Tri Province in central Vietnam and Mukdahan Province in Thailand have signed a cooperation deal for the 2025-30 period in different fields such as trade, investment, tourism, communications, and human resource training and development.
The signing took place during their talks held in the Vietnamese province on Monday, with the participation of the Quang Tri administration and a Thai delegation led by Mukdahan’s Governor Vorayan Bunarat.
Vo Van Hung, chairman of the Quang Tri People’s Committee, underlined the importance of the working session, which was expected to open up opportunities for both sides.
Hung updated the Thai delegation on Quang Tri’s socioeconomic landscape, pointing out key projects currently under construction, including a local airport, the Cam Lo - Lao Bao Expressway, and a conveyor belt over six kilometers long designed to transport coal from Laos.
He believed that there is much room for both provinces to strengthen their cooperation in multiple fields, citing an example of Thai products being favored by lots of Quang Tri residents, but the locals have limited access to authentic Thai items in the area.
The governor of Mukdahan elaborated that the two provinces have maintained their good partnership over the past 19 years, revealing that Mukdahan is home to a large Thai community of Vietnamese origin with 6,000 people.
The signing of the cooperation deal would boost bilateral relations between Vietnam and Thailand, as well as the two provinces, the Thai governor added.
Yatiwatra Mantrivat, the chief of the customs authority in Mukdahan, discussed the prospects for cooperation between Quang Tri and Mukdahan.
He noted that Vietnam’s exports to Mukdahan have increased nearly 11 percent year on year since the beginning of 2024.
The Mukdahan customs authority has pledged to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese goods to enter the Thai locale.
Ho Van Hoan, deputy director of the Quang Tri Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, suggested that both sides should promote exchanges in traditional arts and sports.
