Bac Giang Province in northern Vietnam has approved the development of two new bridges, namely Ha Bac 1 and Van Ha, with a combined investment of around VND1.94 trillion (US$76 million).

The provincial administration announced on Friday that the provincial People's Council had passed two resolutions approving the investment of the bridges.

The projects will strengthen links between Bac Giang and neighboring Bac Ninh Province, improving regional transportation and economic integration.

Under the plan, the Bac Ninh administration will oversee the construction of the Ha Bac 1 Bridge, while the Bac Giang administration will be responsible for the Van Ha Bridge.

The Ha Bac 1 Bridge, with an estimated investment of VND1.7 trillion ($67 million), is scheduled to begin construction in 2026 and be completed in 2027.

Designed to be 970m long and 22.5m wide, the Ha Bac 1 Bridge will connect Provincial Road 298B in Bac Giang with Provincial Road 295C in Bac Ninh, linking National Highway 18 and Ring Road 4.

Meanwhile, the Van Ha Bridge, costing approximately VND240 billion ($9 million), is set to break ground in 2025 and reach completion by 2026.

Spanning 360m with a width of 13m, it will connect Van Ha Commune in Bac Giang’s Viet Yen Town to Hoa Long Ward in the provincial city of Bac Ninh.

The bridge is expected to ease transportation challenges, particularly during the rainy season when flooding frequently disrupts travel. Additionally, it will play a crucial role in disaster prevention and emergency response for the local community.

According to Bac Giang authorities, the two bridges will enhance economic and social integration, improve the quality of life for local residents, and strengthen the cultural and historical ties between the two provinces.

The project aligns with a directive issued by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in September 2024, following his visit to areas affected by typhoon Yagi.

During the visit, PM Chinh instructed Bac Giang and Bac Ninh to allocate funding for the construction of the Van Ha Bridge.

Typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam in early September last year, killing more than 290 people and damaging 237,000 homes.

It is the most powerful storm to have entered the East Vietnam Sea over the past 30 years and the worst typhoon to have hit Vietnam in the last 70 years.
