The Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Vietnam’s southern Mekong Delta region welcomed its first batch of Indian medical students during a ceremony on Thursday.

The university, located in the namesake city, was selected by Aieraa Overseas Studies, an India-based educational consulting company, to provide general practitioner training to Indian medical students, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien, the rector.

The selection was made following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral cooperation signed between the consultant and the school four months ago.

As this is the first course to train doctors of general medicine for foreign students at the university, it is busy preparing staff, lecturers, and students for the challenges that are sure to come during the six-year program, Dr. Kien shared.

“The biggest challenge will likely be the language barrier. I hope teachers and students can overcome it,” he added.

In order to ensure the course a success, there should be specific plans for students to actively study and practice at both the school and in local hospitals, Dr. Kien advised.

For the 2022-23 academic year, the Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy is training 2,100 undergraduate students and more than 2,000 graduate students.

The university had previously trained over 100 foreign students, mainly from Cambodia, and recently received hundreds of students from other countries to visit, study, and practice under cooperative programs.

After 20 years of construction and development, the university has become a prestigious educational institution in both the Mekong Delta region and Vietnam as a whole.

The school is now among the top five medical schools in Vietnam and one of the top 500 universities in Southeast Asia, according to the latest edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

With the educational philosophy of ‘intelligence, medical ethics, and creativity,’ and its slogan of ‘knowledge for you, health for life,’ the university’s mission is to train qualified medical professionals; research, apply, and transfer technologies; and enhance healthcare.
