The Vietnamese team has won 16 individual and five collective prizes, including three gold medals, at the India International Mathematics Competition (InIMC) 2024, according to the contest’s organizer.
Along with the gold medals, the team, including 17 students, won six silvers, six bronzes, and one merit at the competition, which took place in the Indian city of Lucknow from July 26 to 30, attracting more than 600 students from 30 countries.
As an annual contest for young international math students organized alternately by different countries, it is intended for key stage II (upper primary education) and key stage III (lower secondary education) students around the world.
The InIMC featured both Individual and Team Contests, with medals and merits awarded to the winners of the Individual Contest, while team prizes were given to the winners of the Team Contest.
Vietnam's three gold medals were awarded to Nguyen Dang Khanh, an eighth-grade student from Hanoi-based Newton Secondary School - High School, and two sixth graders: Nguyen Phong Chau from Newton 5 Primary Secondary School, and Nguyen Duc Minh from Hanoi-Amsterdam Secondary and High School for Gifted Students, both also located in Hanoi.
The most prominent gold winner is Chau, who outperformed strong competitors from the U.S. by scoring 140 out of 150 points. This was the highest score at the key stage II level (for grade-six students or lower) in the competition’s individual contests.
At this level, the exam consisted of 15 questions to be answered in 90 minutes, while at key stage III level (for eighth graders or lower), the test comprised 12 questions and three essay questions to be completed within 120 minutes.
In the team contests, the Vietnamese team claimed two champion prizes, one first prize, and two second prizes.
The IMC questions and exams are proposed by participating countries and selected by a professional council consisting of experienced international judges and three judges from the host country.
With these achievements, the Vietnamese team excelled over many countries, earning a spot among the best teams at the InIMC 2024.
Last year, the 17-member Vietnamese student team won two gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals, along with two merits, at the BIMC in Bulgaria.
Vietnam has participated in the IMC since 2011.
