My Son tower leaning, on brink of collapse

My Son tower leaning, on brink of collapse

Head of the management of the UNESCO-recognized My Son relic in central Quang Nam province said on Sept 29 that local experts are closely examining the B3 tower, which is leaning and sustains wide cracks.

The B3 tower, part of the My Son tower clusters, is currently leaning eight degrees to the southwest, and sustains cracks which are 7cm deep and 4cm wide. The tower faces collapse at any time.

The management has recently called for urgent solutions to save the tower from leaning further or even collapsing and help it brace for the coming storms.

My Son Sanctuary dates from the 4th to the 13th centuries. Its tower clusters were constructed over ten consecutive centuries in what was the heart of the Champapura kingdom.

The towers of the My Son sanctuary are the most significant constructions of the My Son civilization. They boast a wide variety of architectural designs, and are constructed in fired brick and decorated with sandstone bas-reliefs which depict scenes from the Hindu mythology.

Restoration of the G Tower cluster, one of the key clusters at the My Son sanctuary, by a group of Italian architects began in 1997 and was recently completed. The restored towers were opened to the public in late June, 2013.

The Italian government will continue sponsoring the project, in which the expert team will move on to the L tower cluster.
