Theater director Le Quy Duong has become the first Vietnamese to be elected to the 16-member executive council of the France-based International Theater Institute (ITI).
The election was made at the 34th ITI World Congress in Armenia last month.
Thanks to the election, Duong is now the first Vietnamese theater artist sitting on the executive council in the ITI’s 66-year history.
This milestone will help Vietnam raise its voice in making the world’s theater development policies and creating opportunities for Vietnamese artists to join international activities.
Also at the congress, the director was chosen as the deputy chairman of the ITI’s International Festival Forum, meant to facilitate international personal contact and exchange among festival workers to create new models of theater performance across the globe, especially experimental festivals.
The 34th ITI World Congress took place in Yerevan from November 17 to 22 with a focus on "New Voices, New Audiences: Time for Dialogue!”
It was attended by around 400 representatives from 80 countries and territories.
In January, Le Quy Duong was also the only representative from Vietnam attending the 6th Fujairah International Monodrama Festival organized by the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority in the United Arab Emirates.
Headquartered in Paris, ITI is the world’s largest performing arts organization founded in 1948 by theater and dance experts and UNESCO.
