Vietnam announces 2017 Academy Award submission

A movie adapted from a Vietnamese children book has been submitted to the 89th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
“Toi Thay Hoa Vang Tren Co Xanh” (Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass), adapted from the namesake book by best seller children author Nguyen Nhat Anh, will represent Vietnam at the 2017 Oscar award in February, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said Friday.
Deputy minister Vuong Duy Bien said the ministry’s voting board highly appreciated the film by Victor Vu and decided to submit it to the Academy Awards.
Director Victor Vu said this is a very big encouragement to him.
“I was born and grew up in the U.S. so the motherland Vietnam has always brought me a special feeling,” he expressed.
“I want to tell a very Vietnamese story and ‘Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass’ brings me the chance.
“I hope that the stories about Vietnamese people with a strong desire of life and the spirit of rising could touch people in the world.”
In April, Vu’s movie also won Best Feature Film of the Young People’s Jury Award – part of the annual TIFF Kids International Film Festival in Toronto. Last year, it was named the winner of “Features Films of 2015” at the Silk Road International Film Festival in Fujian Province on September 26.
Vietnam’s previous submissions for the Best Foreign Language Film include Ho Quang Minh’s Gone Gone Forever Gone, Tony Bui’s Three Seasons, Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh’s The Buffalo Boy, Luu Huynh’s The White Silk Dress, and Tran Anh Hung’s The Vertical Ray of the Sun.
Besides the 2017 Academy Award, “Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass” have also been invited to two other festivals, including the Fukuoka Film Festival in Japan, running from September 15 to 25, and the British Film Institute London Film Festival, from October 5 to 16.
Eight other Vietnamese movies have also been invited to the Fukuoka Film Festival, where they will be presented at a special program dedicated to Vietnam titled “Vietnamese evolution – What is happening to Vietnamese films?”
