Do My Linh, who was crowned Miss Vietnam in 2016, has registered to become an organ donor, becoming the first winner of the country’s top beauty pageant to do so.

Linh and her mother, also a donor, were at the Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday morning to complete their registration.

“What this means is that when I’m no more, some parts of my body will remain and, with advances in medical science, help others get a new life,” Linh wrote on Facebook on Monday.

Linh, 23, said it was “an important decision” that received wholehearted support from her mother.

“If she who gave me this body and life has decided to donate her own organs, there’s no reason for me to hesitate over my choice to follow suit,” she wrote, thanking her mother for her “understanding” and “support."

Linh’s donation is part of a campaign launched by the Miss World Vietnam beauty pageant aimed at encouraging people to become organ donors.

Pham Thi Kim Dung, president of Miss World Vietnam, was also at the Cho Ray Hospital to sign up for organ donation with her son on Tuesday.

“Join us and Miss World Vietnam in spreading the message that the greatest everlasting joy is in giving,” Linh wrote.

Linh has portrayed herself as an active participant in charity work since her coronation as Miss Vietnam during the pageant’s 2016 edition in Hanoi.

Representing Vietnam at the Miss World 2017 competition, Linh’s charity project to bring solar power to remote areas in Vietnam won her the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ prize in that year’s pageant.

Miss Vietnam has been held biennially since 1988. The current Miss Vietnam titleholder is Tran Tieu Vy, who was crowned on September 16, 2018 in Ho Chi Minh City.
