Subjective comments about Vietnam in the 2012 US global human rights report is not good for promoting the diplomatic relations between the two countries, a Vietnamese official said. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi made the statement yesterday, saying that the report, although acknowledging some progress in Vietnam’s human rights record, continued to provide subjective comments on human rights performance in the country. Such comments have been based on incorrect information on the actual situation about enforcement of human rights in Vietnam, Nghi said. It is Vietnam’s consistent policy to promote and respect the fundamental rights of all residents, he said, adding that all residents in Vietnam are allowed to exercise their rights within applicable laws. Nghi emphasized that such a report will not help boost the relationship between the two countries. Vietnam and the US have maintained regular dialogues on human rights, and Vietnam hopes that and constructive, straight dialogues, such as the one conducted on April 12, will help provide objective and practical views on the performance of human rights in each country, Nghi said. Such perspectives will help strengthen mutual understanding between Vietnam and the US and thereby boosting their bilateral relations, the official said.
