Vietnam’s 13th National Party Congress officially opens in Hanoi

The 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam officially opened at 8:00 am on Tuesday at the National Convention Center in Hanoi. 

Attending the opening ceremony were leaders and former leaders of the Party, State, Vietnam Fatherland Front, revolutionary veterans, heroic Vietnamese mothers, intellectuals, artists, religious dignitaries, and representatives of young generations.

Foreign ambassadors, chargé d’ affaires, and chief representatives of international organizations in Hanoi, along with 1,587 delegates representing over 5.1 million Party members nationwide were also present at the opening ceremony.

Delegates previously elected 17 members of the Presidium during a preparatory session on Monday.

They also reached high consensus on the Congress’ working regulations, agenda, and election rules.

Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, on behalf of the Politburo, chaired the opening session.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc gave a speech to open the Congress, followed by a report by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong, on behalf of the 12th Party Central Committee.

General Secretary Trong asserted that the 13th National Party Congress is a major political event of the Vietnamese Party and people, and is of great significance to the development and international integration of the country.

The 13th National Party Congress will review the implementation of the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress.

Delegates will also review the national socio-economic development strategy during 2011-20, and set out socio-economic development orientations and tasks for 2021-25.

The Congress will determine goals and orientations for 2030, which will mark the 100th founding anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and a vision for national development toward 2045, which coincides with the 100th founding anniversary of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Regarding personnel work, delegates are set to elect members of the 13th Party Central Committee.

The 13th National Party Congress will run until February 2.
