Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Quang Hieu has been named Vietnamese ambassador to Japan for the 2023-26 tenure.
Vietnamese State President Vo Van Thuong handed over the appointment decision to Deputy Foreign Minister Hieu on Tuesday.
Speaking at the appointment ceremony, Hieu said that he was honored to be the first ambassador to receive an appointment decision signed by President Thuong since the latter took office in early March this year.
The appointment marks 50 years of Vietnam-Japan diplomatic ties and nearly 10 years of the two nations’ in-depth strategic partnership for peace and prosperity in Asia, Hieu stated.
Ambassador Hieu said that he would strive to contribute to the growth of the Vietnam-Japan relations during his tenure.
Japan is one of Vietnam’s key partners, and their bilateral ties have grown strongly since 1973.
Meanwhile, Vietnam is Japan’s biggest labor source market.
Pham Quang Hieu, a 48-year-old resident of Hanoi, is a professional diplomat.
He held several posts associated with the international law, multilateral diplomacy, sectoral construction, and personnel organization fields.
He was posted as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs in May 2021.
On Tuesday, President Thuong also received the ambassadors of Chile, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates.
They came to show their credentials that mark their official tenure in Vietnam.
