Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a welcome ceremony for Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi on Thursday morning.
This is the first visit to Vietnam by a prime minister of Luxembourg in over 20 years.
Vietnam is the top Luxembourg official’s first destination outside Europe this year.
His three-day visit, which is scheduled to wrap up on Friday, is aimed at marking the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Luxembourg diplomatic ties.
The two nations established diplomatic relations on November 15, 1973.
As of March, Luxembourg had got involved in 64 projects in Vietnam with total pledged capital of VND60.7 trillion ($2.6 billion), making the former the third among 24 members of the European Union and 17th among 139 nations and territories worldwide investing in the latter.
During Vietnamese Prime Minister Chinh’s official visit to Luxembourg in December last year, the two countries reached a consensus on the establishment of strategic partnership in green finance.
Luxembourg pledged to help Vietnam develop a new financial hub in Ho Chi Minh City and foster bilateral cooperation in finance, investment, education, training, science, technology, and securities.

Before the welcome ceremony, Prime Minister Bettel laid wreaths and paid tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at the mausoleum and heroes at Bac Son Memorial Statue in the capital city.
He arrived at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on Wednesday morning to start his official visit at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Chinh.
The two top officials were set to visit Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy) and the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum on Thursday afternoon.
The high-ranking representative of Luxembourg will have a meeting with Vuong Dinh Hue, Chairman of the lawmaking National Assembly of Vietnam, on the same day.
After ending his visit to Hanoi, the prime minister of Luxembourg will travel to Ho Chi Minh City, southern Vietnam to meet local leaders and attend some activities and events.
